Joseph W. Lupyak Death, Obituary – It is with deep regret that we must inform you of the demise of Joseph W. Lupyak, a distinguished member of the Special Forces Regiment who served as Command Sergeant Major (retired). This coming Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 11:00 in the morning, the Rogers and Breece Funeral Home Chapel will be the location of a Celebration of Life service.
On Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 9:30 am to 10:45 am, guests are welcome to pay their respects at the Rogers and Breece Funeral Home. The reinterment will take place at Cumberland Memorial Gardens after the ceremony. Joseph Lupyak, who is now a Command Sergeant Major (Retired), joined the Army in February 1951 and retired in September 1980 following a successful career that spanned more than 30 years of active service. Lupyak enlisted in the Army.
During his time in the military, Mr. Lupyak has served in a broad variety of capacities and locations around the world, including Fort Bragg, Germany, Panama, Korea, and Vietnam. In February of 1951, he was given a position with the 11th Airborne Division, and he graduated from jump school in May of the same year. In October of 1951, he was transferred to Korea to serve with the 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division. He spent thirteen months serving his country in Korea and took part in a number of actions during the conflict there.
The beginning of Mr. Lupyak’s encounters with Special Forces dates back to the early days of the organization. In February of 1954, he enlisted as a member of the 77th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He was a member of the 7th and 3rd Special Forces Groups, took part in the Son Tay Raid in 1970, and served with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in the Republic of Vietnam. His military service began in the early 1960s with Detachment A Berlin and continued on through the 7th and 3rd Special Forces Groups. In 1976, he was given the role of Command Sergeant Major for the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), which he held until his retirement in September 1980. He was given this job after being chosen for it.
