John Holian Obituary, John Holian Has passed Away – Death
John Holian Death Obituary – our father John Holian passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 27th, 2023. He went peacefully. He was not only my father but also my mentor and my friend. we are a lot like he was. we became a professor like him and we shared many interests, including hiking, canoeing, gardening, and an interest in Ukraine and our heritage.
we also know his life had an impact on people around the world and this news will bring great sadness to many. He was born on September 18, 1945 a few months after the end of World War II. His family had fled their village (Nemyriv, Ukraine) from the Soviet advance and he was born a refugee.
The photo on the left was taken while they were living in a displaced persons camp in Germany around 1948. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Sociology from Bowling Green State University and he worked for most of his career at Cuyahoga Community College. He and my mom built a great life together, they traveled extensively, and his children and grandchildren made him happy and proud.
Please consider making a donation in his honor to a refugee organization like UNHCR I also set up a fundraiser that I think he would have liked, and you can learn a little more about his life and work here: www.gofundme.com/school-in-nemyriv-ukraine . JOHN HOLIAN, JR., age 77.
