All three degrees were earned in the United States. After that, he earned a position as a lecturer at the NCCU School of Law.
Attorney Collins began his career in the insurance industry in 1970 with North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, where he worked his way up through the ranks to become President and Chief Executive Officer before leaving the company to become Chairman of the Board of Directors. During his stay there, he had a number of different positions inside the company.
He served on numerous civic, fraternal, and government bodies, including the Board of Trustees at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina (UNC). He is a brilliant example of the leadership that is demonstrated by Legal Eagles because of the devotion that he has shown to the people of Durham and the significance that he places on giving back.
In the month of May in 2022, Bert Collins and Carolyn B. Collins contributed $300,000 to the endowment of a scholarship that was established at the Law School. They were recognized by having the room designated as Classroom 202 in their honor.
